Maureen Paley Interim Art is pleased to present, for the first time at the Herald Street gallery, an exhibition of new work by Ewan Gibbs. This will be his third solo show with the gallery.
Since graduating from Goldsmiths College five years ago Ewan Gibbs has made drawings depicting the exterior and interior landscapes of hotels. In the most part these images had been selected from holiday brochures, however, more recently he has been using photographs he has taken himself of hotel facades and using these as templates for the new work.
Each of these new drawings on graph paper has taken a week to complete. The mark making is reduced to a single circle within each square of a grid, with the tonal variations in the image created by changes in the density of the mark.
The translation from photograph to drawing creates a generalised monochrome image of these facades. Although the manner in which Gibbs approaches these drawings is with the utmost attention to detail, the image lacks the clarity of the original. At a distance the drawings appear at their most defined. On closer scrutiny the mark making is revealed while the image itself is lost.
Gibbs has shown his drawings in solo shows at Paul Morris Gallery, New York, his work has been seen most recently in London at a two person exhibition with David Shrigley at One in the Other. His work has been collected widely in Britain and abroad. Notable public collections include Tate Gallery, London, The San Francisco Museum of Modem Art, Fogg Museum of Art, Harvard University Art Museums, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Gallery opening hours: Thursday to Sunday 11.00 - 6.00
